Press Release by Dr. Zakhilwal related to Attorney General’s Office Ruling on his case
Kabul, December 25th, 2012
On August 1st, 2012 a national TV broadcast statements of my bank accounts suggesting that the transactions shown on these documents were suspicious.
I immediately responded by officially requesting the Attorney General of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to fully investigate the allegations, examining all documents, including financial statements and transactions of my family members over the period of my public service.
After four and a half mounts of comprehensive investigation, the Attorney General’s Office made public the results of its investigations yesterday, December 24th, 2012. The ruling of the AG clearly stated that all allegations against me were false and that neither I, nor any members of my family were involved in any dubious activity.
I take pride in the fact that throughout my career in the government I have been a strong voice and an active player for reform, transparency and accountability in all public spheres. Although the politically and personally motivated defamatory campaign against me was hurtful – both for me and my family, I am now pleased that it provided me with an opportunity to once again become an example for transparency by volunteering myself for full investigation regarding the leveled allegations.
My hope is that my example will be followed by other high ranking public servants.
My case also serves as a delivery on our commitments to the Afghan people and international community for holding ourselves accountable.
