During a video conference with the Director General of the UN Office at Geneva, Secretary General of the Conference on Disarmament Tatyana Valova, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan noted the importance of strengthening international cooperation to achieve global security and reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s interest in promoting the Common Concept of Security.
As part of its neutral status, Turkmenistan stands ready to contribute to international efforts to advance non-proliferation and disarmament negotiations. As a party to fundamental UN treaties and conventions, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), Turkmenistan is in favor of promoting the Treaty on the Establishment of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia.
It was noted that on the initiative of Turkmenistan with the support of the UN in June 2010, Ashgabat hosted the International Conference on Disarmament in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea Basin. In this context, the proposal of the Turkmen side was expressed to create a permanent platform for political dialogue on disarmament issues in the region.
The sides noted the importance of using preventive measures in the disarmament sphere. Thus, Turkmenistan’s readiness was expressed to assist in the process of increasing the potential of personnel on this topic.
During the meeting, a constructive exchange of views took place on the prospects for cooperation.
