Deputy Secretary General of the CIS Ilkhom Nematov arrived in Ashgabat at the head of the working group on the opening of the CIS Observer Mission to monitor the election campaign of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The CIS Observer Mission officially started its work on 8 March.
As part of the opening of the Mission, Ilham Nematov met with Chairman of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums in Turkmenistan Gulmurad Muradov.
Nematov stressed that the main tasks of the Mission are to objectively assess the election campaign for its compliance with national legislation and to assist in holding free and democratic elections, assuring that the Mission will carry out its functions strictly in accordance with the laws of Turkmenistan, based on universally recognized principles and norms of international law in the field of elections.
Currently, the composition of the mission is being formed. It will include representatives of the CIS member states, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and the CIS Executive Committee.
On 9 March, Nematov was received by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev.
The main topic of discussion was the preparation for the upcoming parliament elections in Turkmenistan on 26 March 2023.
During the meeting, the sides also discussed priority areas and prospects for constructive partnership within the CIS, special attention was paid to the further development of interstate cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reports.
Hajiyev stressed that Turkmenistan, taking into account its neutral status and associate membership in the CIS, is firmly committed to further cooperation with this organization, involvement in mutually beneficial political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian ties. ///nCa, 9 March 2023
