Mary, 16 May 2023: Within the framework of the joint project of UNDP and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan “Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Avaza”, a training seminar was organized themed “Studying the features of the operation of energy-saving lamps in climatic conditions of Turkmenistan. Possibility of using waste as an alternative source of energy”.
The event was attended by specialists of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, teachers and students of the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan (SEIT, Mary), specialists of the Research and Production Center “Renewable Energy Sources (RES)” at SEIT, as well as specialists and international consultants of the aforementioned UNDP project.
The purpose of the seminar was to provide participants with the information on the principles of energy-saving lamps operation in climatic conditions of Turkmenistan, discuss the development of a new sector of the electric power industry «Renewable energy» in Turkmenistan, learn about international experience in the development of normative documents and best practices on the use of renewable energy, as well as introduce participants to innovative energy-efficient technologies in the electric power industry.
The participants were also provided with the information on ongoing activities for sorting and processing of municipal solid waste, and the possibility of using waste as renewable source of energy.
During the presentations, activities carried out jointly by specialists from the Ministry of Energy, GEIT and the UNDP project specialist on the introduction of energy-saving lamps and innovative energy-efficient technologies in urban street lighting were discussed. Participants were introduced to the ongoing project activities implemented to support the development of the regulatory frameworks in the electric power industry, the development of the renewable energy and waste management sectors.
The seminar was held with the participation of UNDP international consultants Mr. Aleksey Zakharov and Ms. Elena Zhuchenko, who introduced the seminar participants to the international experience in the energy audit of electricity distribution networks and street lighting in cities. “By sharing knowledge and best practices for designing, installing and maintaining outdoor lighting installations using solar and wind energy, we enable young people gain an important competitive advantage in the labor market and the rapidly growing renewable energy sector,” said Mr. Zakharov. ///UNDP Turkmenistan
