Director General of the Iranian Foreign Ministry for Persian Gulf Affairs Alireza Enayati announced the upcoming launch of the Iran-Oman-Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan corridor, Mehr News agency reports.
In an interview with the IRNA news agency, the official spoke about the recent visit of Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said to Tehran, saying that serious discussions were held between Tehran and Muscat on the activation of the “Ashgabat Agreement” providing for a transit route between Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
According to Enayati, the volume of trade between Iran and Oman increased by $2 billion last year.
Progress has also been made between the two countries in the field of transport and shipping.
The Ashgabat Agreement is an agreement on multimodal transportation between the Governments of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, India, Pakistan, Oman on the creation of an international transport and transit corridor facilitating the transportation of goods between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf.
The Agreement entered into force in April 2016. Ashgabat in Turkmenistan is the depositary State of the agreement.
The purpose of this agreement is to improve transport links in the Eurasian region and synchronize it with other transport corridors, including the International North–South Transport Corridor. ///nCa, 31 May 2023
