On Monday, 12 June, a delegation of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) headed by High Commissioner on National Minorities (HCNM) Kairat Abdrakhmanov was received at the Parliament of Turkmenistan.
The sides discussed the effectiveness of the partnership between Turkmenistan and the OSCE HCNM in a wide range of areas, including cooperation in the political, economic, environmental and human dimensions.
As Abdrakhmanov stressed, the OSCE fully supports the balanced foreign policy pursued by the head of Turkmenistan, which is an important factor of peace and stability in the region, as well as a socially oriented domestic policy aimed at the comprehensive, harmonious development of society.
OSCE representatives positively assessed the ongoing reforms on democratization of Turkmen society. The urgency of the peacekeeping initiatives put forward by Turkmenistan and aimed at ensuring universal security and sustainable development was also emphasized.
During the meeting, the parties discussed issues related to national minorities and their integration into society.
As the Speaker of the Parliament of Turkmenistan Dunyagozel Gulmanova noted, Turkmenistan, having ratified the main international conventions, including in the field of human rights, is taking practical steps to implement their provisions. In this regard, it was stressed that the Government of Turkmenistan pays great attention to the protection and implementation of the rights of all members of society, as reflected in the National Human Rights Action Plan for 2021-2025.
The sides also exchanged views on the prospects for building up partnership in the humanitarian field, in particular, in the field of science and education. The special importance attached in the country to the issues of deep integration of young people into world science, the study of foreign languages, which in turn plays a key role in the development of international cooperation.
The OSCE delegation confirmed its readiness to continue developing a constructive dialogue while taking into account existing, as well as new joint projects and programmes. The delegation noted the effectiveness of the work of the National Parliament in the field of legal implementation of the norms of international law in the country’s legislation.
As part of the visit to Turkmenistan, OSCE HCNM will have meetings in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a number of ministries and departments. A cultural program includes a visit to the Kunyaurgench State Cultural and Historical Reserve in the Dashoguz province. ///nCa, 13 June 2023
