Over 330 objects of socio-economic and municipal infrastructure have been built as part of the first stage of construction of the new city of Arkadag, which grew literally from scratch in a picturesque place at the foothill of the majestic Kopetdag mountains.
Among the facilities of the new city – Berdimuhamed Annayev Pedagogical Secondary Vocational School, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Center, Sachly Dursunova Medical Secondary Vocational School, kindergartens and secondary schools, medical institutions, sports complexes, the Main City Department of Physical Culture and Sports, a multidisciplinary sports complex and Sports Center (Water Sports Complex), a stadium for 10,000 seats, Multidisciplinary hospital for 350 beds, Oncology Center for 150 beds, Maternal and Child Health Center for 150 beds, an ambulance center, a health center, as well as an automobile company providing various types of specialized vehicles.
The social infrastructure includes the Dovletmammet Azadi Library, the Museum of Local History, the Sakhy Jepbarov Specialized Art School, the Shukur Bakhshi Children’s Art School, the Gerogly State Equestrian Circus, the Aman Gulmammedov State Drama Theater.
The Arkadag TV channel has been launched and the Arkadag newspaper was established.
The total cost of the first stage of the Arkadag city project is US $ 3.3 billion. The second stage worth of US $ 1.5 billion is expected to be completed in 2024.
Smart houses
The housing stock in the new city is represented by 5-, 7- and 9-storey apartment buildings and 2-storey cottages stuffed with smart technologies. By the way, the software for the smart city titled “Arkadagly yashlar” was developed by students of the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Construction.
The main features of smart homes:
- Intelligent home management system in real time via the Internet. It is also possible to control houses and household processes remotely, for example, using a smartphone.
- All devices in the house receive commands from the smart home LAN server and are executed automatically. For example, a tablet connected to the server, turns on household appliances, regulates lighting, air temperature and humidity in the rooms.
- To clean the apartment from a smartphone or tablet, you can run a robot vacuum cleaner.
- The “smart” house is also equipped with special devices (sensors) that, reacting to movement, turn on and off the lights.
- Electrical equipment turns off automatically in case of long inactivity.
- The residents of the house are alerted in the event, for example, of a water leak, and the water supply system is automatically shut down.
In short, a smart home is comfortable, safe and economical.
A fiber-optic communication system has also been laid in the city, i.e. residents have received high-speed Internet and high-quality 4G communication.
For the first time, a new 123 Service has been put into operation in Arkadag, which unites the operational services of gas and fire safety, ambulance under a single number.
Smart transport
The avenues, streets and roundabouts of Arkadag are equipped with modern lighting, video surveillance and control systems. The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) regulates traffic flows using innovative technologies.
New electric buses and electric taxi cars are used as public transport in the city. QR codes have been created for the use of apps for Bus stop and taxi service.
Terminals are provided for making non-cash payments for travel and online orders. Lanes for public transport are allocated on the roads.
Smart routes allow drivers to save travel time and avoid traffic jams.
In addition, a special app provides information about the routes of movement, the arrival time of buses at stops.
“Smart” parking lots and charging stations for electric cars are monitored using special sensors.
Children’s rehabilitation center: phytobar and sand from the Caspian coast
One of the most important medical facilities in the city is the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Center.
This is a complex of facilities, including an administrative building, two kindergartens – for 150 and 100 places, a health and rehabilitation department, outdoor pools, children’s playgrounds, sand for which was brought from the coast of the Caspian Sea.
The total area of the complex is about 16.3 hectares.
On the ground floor there is a phytobar offering various types of tea and medicinal decoctions.
On the same floor there is a rehabilitation hall equipped with innovative technologies, and departments for early development and adaptation of the child, massage, ultrasound, X-ray, as well as therapy and wellness procedures room, etc. All of them are equipped with advanced specialized medical equipment.

The city of Arkadag occupies a total area of 1002 hectares and is designed for 64,000 people or 11,652 households.
Arkadag has gained international recognition, having awarded over 20 certificates, diplomas and letters from international organizations and scientific institutes. Among them is the UN Habitat Certificate of Appreciation to the city of Arkadag for the efforts made to implement the principles of inclusive, safe, sustainable and reasonable areas that contribute to the localization of Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda in Turkmenistan. ///nCa, 3 July 2023 (photo credit – TDH)
