The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has confirmed that it has formed a joint committee to discuss importing gas from Qatar and Turkmenistan, Iraqi News reports.
The committee includes officials from the Ministry of Oil and the Ministry of Electricity and is aimed to arrange gas imports from Turkmenistan and Qatar. The committee’s delegations will visit both countries to discuss possible gas purchase deals.
The gas that Iraq imports is used to operate power plants in central and southern Iraq. These power plants totally generate around 7,000 megawatts per day.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has urged the government to find alternative sources to gas imports from Iran. He has said that the country is facing problems providing the required fuel for power plants to generate electricity. ///nCa, 9 August 2023 (photo credit – AP)
