UNECE welcomes the decision by President of Turkmenistan to approve a Roadmap for the development of international cooperation for 2023-2024 to study Turkmenistan’s accession to Global Methane Pledge, said Dario Liguti, Director of UNECE Sustainable Energy Division.
During his remarks at the plenary session of Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan-2023 International Conference, which kicked off in Ashgabat on Wednesday, Liguti invited Turkmenistan for the next global methane forum, to be convened in Geneva on 18-20 March 2024 and a roundtable to discuss methane mitigation actions in Central Asia.
The forum aims to promote replicable methane mitigation successes and mobilize action to continue making progress toward reducing methane emissions. The event will be hosted by UNECE and Global Methane Initiative in partnership with Global Methane Hub and Climate and Clean Air Coalition.
Liguti mentioned the key state programs elaborated by the government of Turkmenistan, including the presidential program for social and economic development for 2022-2028, the Law on Renewable energy 2021, Hydrogen energy roadmap 2022-2023.
According to him, UNECE stands ready to engage with Turkmenistan to implement this legal and regulatory framework, to make them business opportunity for all stakeholders, through joint program that will focus on two interlinked areas.
First one, supporting implementation of a Roadmap for 2023-2024 for the development of international cooperation aimed at exploring Turkmenistan’s accession to Global Methane Pledge and the implementation of the Paris agreement at the national level.
Second, Turkmenistan’s carbon neutrality roadmap until 2052.
UNECE representative underlined that these are high objectives that will ensure future social development opportunities and UNECE is ready to work with Government of Turkmenistan and all stakeholder to realize this goals. ///nCa, 25 October 2023
