On Wednesday, 27 March 2024, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Secretary General of the UN World Tourism Organization Zurab Pololikashvili.
Their conversation focused on the current state and future prospects for collaboration in tourism, a sector of mutual interest.
President Berdimuhamedov highlighted Turkmenistan’s long-standing partnership with the UN and its specialized agencies, including the UNWTO. He emphasized Turkmenistan’s membership since 1993 and the over 30 years of productive cooperation.
Recognizing the untapped potential, the President expressed his support for strengthening bilateral relations to maximize Turkmenistan’s tourism potential.
The head of Turkmenistan mentioned the ongoing development of country’s tourism industry. Turkmenistan has several entries in the Guinness World Records, including Ashgabat’s distinction as the world’s most white marble city, with numerous other attractions also holding records.
For history buffs, Turkmenistan offers UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Kunyaurgench, Ancient Merv, and Nisa, providing a window into the unique cultural heritage and ancient history of the Turkmen people.
For eco-tourists, breathtaking destinations abound, including the Kopetdag mountains, the diverse flora and fauna of the Karakum Desert, the coastal areas along the Amu Darya River, Koitendag, and the Caspian Sea.
The meeting also stressed the significance of Turkmenistan’s health and wellness sector, encompassing sanatoriums and resorts.
