Erzurum, one of Türkiye’s premier ski destinations, is set to welcome winter enthusiasts this year with the prestigious titles of the ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) Tourism Capital and the first European Capital of Winter Sports, awarded by ACES (European Capitals and Cities of Sports Federation). The beautiful eastern province, offering uninterrupted skiing experiences at its Palandöken Ski Resort, will also host various prominent winter sports events, such as the Winter Games and World Snowboard Cup.
While seasoned athletes from different countries will fiercely compete in various branches at Palandöken’s state-of-the-art facilities, thriller seekers will enjoy their exciting performances on the resort’s fine powder snow and among its breathtaking mountain views. Erzurum will also buzz with vibrant concerts, captivating exhibitions, and flavourful gastronomy festivals, simultaneously held to provide visitors with a multifaceted glimpse into the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
Starting Lineup: Winter Games
The first international event in the event calendar of Palandöken is the Winter Games, to be held from January 6 to 12. The Games will bring the excitement of winter sports competitions to Palandöken with the participation of approximately 350 athletes in 11 disciplines, such as skiing and snowboarding. Among the participants will be the ECO member countries. The Winter Games is the first ECO event at Palandöken. The competition will be open for anyone to watch live.
World Snowboard Cup Excitement
Another standout event at Palandöken Ski Resort this year will be the World Snowboard Cup (SBX). The event, held by FIS (The International Ski and Snowboard Federation) for the first time in Türkiye in 2018, returns to Palandöken on March 1-3. Three unforgettable days await thrill seekers, filled with adrenaline-packed races and athletes pushing the limits of speed. The exclusive event will also be broadcast on national and international channels for adrenaline lovers who couldn’t have a chance to visit the resort.
More Adrenaline-Pumping Events
The engaging lineup of events at Palandöken also includes the Ice Climbing Türkiye Championship, the Snow Volleyball World Tour, and the Snow Downhill Race. The Ice Climbing Türkiye Championship, organised by the Turkish Mountaineering Federation, will take place at the resort on February 7-10. The first and only artificial ice park in Türkiye, particularly popular among adrenaline junkies interested in ice climbing, is located at Palandöken Ski Resort. The 20-25-metre ice wall, built on the southern runway at the resort, will host ambitious, competitive ice climbers, offering them a thrilling challenge with its unique structure. One of the Snow Volleyball Word Tour stops will also be Palandöken Ski Resort on March 13-16 this year. Volleyball athletes will compete at qualifying round matches on snow-filled fields. Moreover, at the Snow Downhill Race, pros will compete at a mass mountain bike competition at Palandöken. Many bikers that simultaneously descend snow-covered ski trails at the resort are a sight to behold.
