Berdy Berdiyev, a graduate student of the Institute of Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, recently received the third copyright certificate of the State Service for Intellectual Property for developments related to various medical applications of Kopetdag wormwood, TDH reports.
Wormwood, which Turkmens call Yovshan, is one of the medicinal plants that humanity has been using for medical purposes for more than one millennium. Of the 32 species of wormwood found on the territory of Turkmenistan, 17 grow in the mountains and foothills of Kopetdag and four of them are endemic.
Together with one of his scientific supervisors – Doctor of Chemical Sciences D. Gadamov and specialists of the Technology Center of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, Berdiyev developed a method for preparing medical briquettes from wormwood raw materials remaining after extraction of essential oils.
Burning briquettes emit smoke containing eucalyptol, which is a disinfecting, antiviral and antibacterial agent.
A preparation for the control of agricultural pests and anti-corrosion protection for mild steel were also obtained from the Kopetdag wormwood.
The pharmacopoeia article issued by the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan confirms the practical significance of these developments and the possibility of their medical application.///nCa, 7 February 2023
