During the Cabinet of ministers’ meeting on Friday (14 June) DPM, foreign minister Rashid Meredov presented plans for the development of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO).
Modernizing the national economy through technology and innovation is a top priority for Turkmenistan. Collaboration with specialized international and regional organizations, like the EAPO, is crucial to achieving this goal.
Established in 2013, the State Service for Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Finance and Economy spearheads these efforts. The 2021-2025 National Intellectual Property Development Program guides the Service’s comprehensive work and fosters international cooperation to safeguard intellectual property rights.
In particular, Turkmenistan plans to join the Protocol on the Protection of Industrial Designs to the Eurasian Patent Convention, which is a key document of the EAPO.
A proposal was also made to expand Turkmenistan’s representation in the Eurasian Patent Office of the EAPO.
In addition, it is proposed to hold a regional forum on the legal protection of industrial designs in Ashgabat in October this year, and a regular meeting of the Administrative Council of the Eurasian Patent Organization in 2025.
Commenting the report, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov stressed that Turkmenistan is taking consistent steps to develop and expand fruitful cooperation with reputable international structures. Having approved the proposals, the head of state instructed the Deputy Prime Minister to continue the relevant work to strengthen constructive cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Eurasian Patent Organization.
The Eurasian Patent Office is an international organization whose main task is to provide legal protection to inventions and industrial designs via one Eurasian patent valid on the territory of 8 countries. The headquarters of the organization is located in Moscow. Turkmenistan has been a party to the Eurasian Patent Convention since 12 August 1995. ///nCa, 18 June 2024
